I would like to recoat a hardwood garage side door. How do you know what is already on the door? or does it really matter. Can you put woodstain onto varnish and vice-versa? Any help appreciated as usual !!

Woodstain wont take ontop off clear varnish.... Need to strip to bare then woodstain. Or try an extrior grade Stained Varnish after a really good rubbing down. The door I mean .
