you're on about that hammerite gun thing..
I was on about powder coating..

I was on about getting the missus closely involved with 240v!

A tip about cleaning Hammerite out of brushes:

White spirit certainly doesn't work, nor does normal cellulose thinners. I've found, however, that UPVC window frame cleaner (Siroflex SX) does the job brilliantly and comes in under £6 per litre (a lot less than the 'real' thing). Haven't tried it as a thinner, though.

Another tip:

You can buy a tin of Hammerite Thinners from places that sell Hammerite Paint.

No doubt you can, but at what cost? If you can find a substitute that does the job equally well, and costs a lot less, wich one would you buy?

Blimey. This thread is still here?!

Never did give it that 2nd coat either lol

Double the price now. I know this is an old thread but it's useful for anyone wondering.

Would this be a good substitute for the product recommended? https://www.amazon.co.uk/solvent-cl...efix=upvc+window+frame+cleaner,diy,155&sr=1-4

I don't use Hammerite.

Rust can spread underneath it, and it is very very difficult to strip or repaint

That's a fair point, that's why it's worth stripping back to bare metal and treating before applying paint if there is a chance any areas covered might have areas of rust you can't get to.

I've ordered 5l of Xylene as I believe that's essentially what Hammerite brush cleaner is.

I believe it is widely sold to inexperienced people to hide rust.

Yes, that is true. The instructions say otherwise, even if the front says paint over rust.
