Is the UK a better place since the UK opened its borders to all and sundry from Europe in 2004? Or has it depressed wages, raised unemployment and overcrowded an already overcrowded country?

Let's vote on it.

Yes, all of the above. Not a day goes past without hearing Polish being spoken.

I don't dislike Poles, and have enjoyed holidays to their country. They were our wartime allies, and even had Polish squadrons in the RAF. However it is now getting ridiculous with the numbers involved. Every Polish woman seems to have at least one toddler in tow.

Where will our own young people go to get jobs?

Joe, with respect (an unusual concept on here  ) this subject matter has been done to death on here... hasn't it?

is it really worth another poll on the Poles? ;)

It's the biggest social issue since the war. When you lose your job or your kids can't get one then maybe you'll change your tune.

Working in the NHS, as I do, I think it would fall apart if it wasn't for them. There are jobs which white English people just won’t do because it's beneath them. Also, I have lost count of the Mulsim friends I’ve made who are Doctors, Scientists and Clinician’s and, once again, they are so very committed to health care I can’t imagine who would fill their shoes if they left.

I think this has been discussed because I'm sure I've said this before here. I think I may have also mentioned a TV program where three white guys were to pick a crop from a farmer’s field. One didn’t turn up because of some lame excuse and the two that did picked a fraction of what the Polish do.

So who would you use if you were the farmer? We have done it to ourselves. The problem, IMHO, comes from indolent workers who think this country owes them a living instead of getting out there and working hard for it.

My main issue is with over population more than who is in this country doing what; although there does seem to be a slippery slope of the indigenous population, for want of a better word, leaving this country and being replaced by ‘foreigners’.

On my annual pilgrimage to Birmingham city centre to check out what’s new or different and think back to how I remember it in the early 70’s it’s unrecognisable. Whether it’s for better or worse is a personal opinion but, again, it’s the sheer number of people which bothers me. Maybe it’s because I’m a country bumpkin born and raised in Cornwall.

So to answer your Poll is difficult for me Joe. Perhaps if there was one something like “Yes it’s good but in moderation and consideration for our own people”. I know that’s woolly but I know so many people from so many different nations and cultures, speaking as someone who most definitely is not xenophobic, it’s nice to learn from each other.

Why eat apples all your life when there’s a whole world of fruit out there to discover. Travel, as they say, broadens the mind. So, on balance, I think I will go for "YES", we are better for it, (not the most popular it seems). Voting right now in your poll...

it was on the back of cheap labour from the former soviet states that we all enjoyed a long and lovely financial boom in the 1990's and early 2000's

this ain't new you know?

before the first world war there were no borders or passports and people could pretty come and go as they wished and many did, many italians for example walked from italy to wales to get jobs in the mining industry.

our whole country is peopled by immigrants, there no such thing as an indigenous english person.

the problem isn't the immigration but those who come here for the benefits and NHS.

Kick them out and welcome those who want to work I say

And what of every English knocked-up white scum teenager with a slag tag?

I’ve seen the Polish people with their kids and very well behaved they are too! (The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree).

Show me a scummy mother and I’ll show you a scummy kid ready and waiting like a time bomb to p*ss everyone off later in life and be a burden to the rest of decent folk.

Yes, that's why I included "for want of a better word". But I hoped my meaning was understood.

From a plumbing/trades perspective, european immigration HAS forced down wages for a lot of british workers in this area.

Thats the downside.

The upside is customers make a good saving, with work done by pretty decent foreign workers.

So it has its positives as well as negatives.

As someone starting out in the plumbing trade, i can tell you its annoying. I had a job about a year ago, an entire bathroom refit (floor, wall tiles, 3 peice suite, shower, shelves, units etc) and the woman haggled me down to about £500 which was slave labour. BUT she had quotes from other plumbers, polish, iraqi and Kosovan who were willing to do it for about the same price. Usually i would charge at least £1'000 I only took the job as i was starting out and needed the funds for new tools, equipment etc. Pre-2004, i reckon i could have charged the going rate of £1000.

hear hear.

Now if i'd said this, i'd get told to popodom along and p off back to where i came from

Big Tone. It's all very well saying how marvellous Indian doctors are but why aren't they doctoring the people that trained them? (the people who live in India).

Why aren't Polish plumbers working for the people who trained them (the people of Poland)

Why do we leave our own young people languishing in poverty and despair when we should be training them?

Why are we creating an underclass that will never work but will riot and steal because that's all they can aspire to?

It's going to get nasty in the next decade or two. You just wait and see.

Unfortunately, that does still happen – by idiots. I remember back in the bad old days when people despised ‘Pakis’ but the truth is Pakistani’s were/are hard working decent folk. They worked long hours, and on Sundays. This was before the big Supermarkets opened and turned our peaceful Sundays, (when I used to be able to cycle in more safety and breath fresher air), into just another Saturday shopping day.

I guess it’s down to what’s called market forces Joe. Also, many of them come here for their education and stay. I know because they work at my place, sadly on rotation. So just as they gain all the practice to go with their education they move on to another service. It’s how I know so many Muslim’s really; they are just wonderful and I miss them, and all the other foreigners we are privileged to have helping us. :(

What do you mean by 'rotation'? Where do they go?

If you lose your job and your kids cannot get work there is a pattern and it's got nothing to do with polish people.
It's because you are thick and unemployable, and so are your kids.

There is plenty of work.
