Hiya,

I'm attempting to bring a bit of a 'Manhattan apartment' look to my house in Brizzle :p

I've exposed the brickwork on one wall by hacking off the render, raking out the old mortar and re-pointing.

Now I'm looking to run some cables across the wall using 20mm metal conduit. It seems easy to buy the angle boxes and bends (e.g. http://www.screwfix.com/p/20mm-galvanised-normal-bend/45199) but I'm struggling to track down a straight piece of conduit.

I'm pretty keen on using metal conduit because it's all part of the look. Any ideas where I can buy some lengths of the straight 20mm sections?

Cheers,
Marv

Oh, I found some here:

It's also worth searching this forum to read some interesting discussions on the importance of earthing metal conduit.

Cheers,

I would imagine that delivery for lengths of conduit would be relatively expensive.
You might want to try some local independent electrical wholesalers/suppliers
or http://www.cef.co.uk/branches/Bristol

If you've no previous experience of running conduit (maybe you have?), you're going to need a pipe vice, 20mm stocks & die and cutting paste. Don't forget to file off the sharp burr from the conduit ends to avoid cutting into the cable. Also don't let the conduit turn when in the vice as the jaw marks always look a mess.

Conduit really has to be neat to look 'the business'.

IME, most places will deliver 3m lengths of conduit (just as with 3m lengths of copper pipe etc.) for their 'standard delivery charge'.

Don't buy bends.

To SNM's kit list add a bending machine, get a few extra pieces of conduit, and plan to invest some time in learning how to use it.

Also add some galvanising touch-up paint.

Any electrical wholesaler will sell it
I had no idea that Screwfix didn't sell it. How bizarre. It's like selling 15mm compression or solder plumbing fittings but not 15mm copper tube.
Same here, and it does seem bizarre, given that they sell a wide range of metal conduit fittings. Nor is it a question of length - they sell plenty of things in 3m lengths (plastic conduit, copper pipe etc.).

Kind Regards, John

Great, thanks all.

I've tracked down a local supplier who sells 3.75m lengths.

Ah, I remember sheet metal and hydraulic pipe bending from my days as an apprentice! That was long ago - it will be fun to try it on 20mm steel pipe!

Have you considered this type of wiring, for the look?

We tend to use a pair of closed pliers inside the end to get rid of the sharp edges.

lol. Thats because you've never been properly trained into how to install steel conduit. Are you also a "spark" that thinks the standard way to use a bending machine is to pull the lever upwards?
