Seems like i just have a towel warmer. About as much use as a chocolate fireguard at this time of year.

I may be reading it wrong but it sounds like opening up the cold flow more solved your issue. I would have thought i need to turn the cold to a more restrictive position to balance the flow and hopefully get a hotter shower. I may try turning the mains cold off just to eliminate the mains feed...
The hot and cold were tapped off a seperate cloakroom sink/toilet feed so i assume it is not mains fed but not sure how i woud check with the pipes not visible now. Would turning off the mains tap tell me as i assume it will still feed from the tank if it was tank fed until it emptied.
