At the moment I am using Blackfriars paint and varnish remover on my staircase/panelling/spindles. Its just like the old nitromors stuff, stinks, burns skin etc, but actually works, unlike the modern green nitromors.
Possibly a rat, as they are very good climbers and experts at getting up and down drainpipes. Put a good dose of poison down, as rats are very hardy and a small dose they will easily survive, then becoming immune to that particular poison.
Being a house built in the '50s, I would have thought a firebreak between lofts would have been par for the course, but just have a look in the loft to make sure it is still in place. Smells from next door could be coming from that area and into your house.
If you paint it with that high temperature matt black stove paint, then use a grate polish after it has cured, it gives you that gun metal finish that you mention. It worked for me.
