Thanks for the responses!! What is this amount of settlement due to then? as only the 1st storey is affected? Is it the wooden joists? as it it was the foundations, bricks, etc......then i woud have seen cracks all over? This still leaves me with a really bad squeaky 18mm chipboard...

The reason you should not connect a light to the ring is that the ring has a 30A fuse or c/b. A fault in the light would need to pull 30A before the fuse blows - by which time it may have done something interesting - liek melted the wires!!!! Practically what you say can be done, not sure...
