Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to go horizontal.

Lining paper - horizontal or vertical?

Does it matter whether lining paper is hung horizontally or vertically? For my money, as long as the seams do not line up with the seams of the top paper I would have thought it would be ok.

    Wallpaper difficult corner detail

Thanks everyone, I spotted the other thread after I had posted this. I'm going to use an embossed paper & paint over it, so matching the pattern should not be too much of an issue. I'll post pics when I'm done.

Have BT got their wires crossed?

If it aint broke - don't fix it. Although this may cause a problem if you try and get ADSL broadband.

    cable connection

The coax can indeed be split at the 'drop-box' or enywhere else that is convenient. Splitting the signal does not affect your broadband speed, that is governed by the modem itself & the config file it downloads from the subscriber system everytime it boots up. As long as the engineer compensates...

    cable connection

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is just another type of broadband technology, that works through a BT telephone line. Sounds like your best bet is to get your cable account transferred and get yourself a wireless router - just make sure you buy one that is for a cable modem, not an...

    cable connection

I presume by "cable broadband" you mean Virgin. If so I'm pretty sure they don't supply wireless modems. You would have to get them to hardwire the modem to cupboard under the stairs then buy a wireless router & install it yourself. Make sure you have a mains socket uder the stairs! There should...

Preparing old fireplace for a new gas fire - advice please?

OK, just a progress update for anyone who is interested... I have now removed the old fireback & back boiler; tiled the hearth with tiles reclaimed from my front room fireplace and purchased a new fire which I am hoping to get fitted this week. I'm also in the process of cleaning up & waxing...

    Tv/Vcr/Satallite input

I presume you have this set up to allow you to record satellite channels & terrestrial channels? If so you don't actually need the 'y-splitter'. Plug the aerial cable into the 'RF-in' socket on the Sat Then connect the 'RF-out' on the Sat to the RF-in'/'ant' socket on the vid. The RF-out on...

Messed up telephone wiring, help please!

The fault clearly lies with the plug-in extension from the hallway socket. It could either be a damaged cable, causing a short between the 'legs' of the line; a faulty connector/socket at either end again causing a short; or it could be a faulty phone/device plugged into the upstairs socket...

Cream/brown tiles needed for 1930s fireplace.

I am building a new hearth for my 1930s fireplace & need to find about 60 4"x4" tiles that match those shown in the photo. Please could someone identify what style/colour these are called or point me towards a source? Thanks.

Preparing old fireplace for a new gas fire - advice please?

Thanks clf-gas, I had a CORGI fitter roung today who did his own smoke test and confirmed the flu is ok. He said to remove the clay 'chairbrick' & back boiler. Then take the dimensions of the opening so that I can select the right fire. he also wanted me to drill a hole for the 8mm pipe as he...

    Virgin Cable Installation

sawtooth, It sounds like your property IS servicable for cable if there is already a siamese cable there. This cable should come through the front garden from the duct in the street. The FM splitter means your house has previously had cable TV so there is no reason why you cant have TV and...

problem with non standard colours on extension cable

Alternatively you could connect your cable directly into the back of the extension face plate in the master socket. Undo the two screws & remove the half panel. Connect wires to position 2,3 & 5. Normal cenvention is: 2 - blue/white 3 - orange/white 5 - white/blue. ...but as long as you...

Preparing old fireplace for a new gas fire - advice please?

I want to get an open gas fire fitted in my original 1930 fireplace - photo attached. Obviously I will get a CORGI engineer to do all the gas work & smoke tests etc, and we've already had the chimney swept. I just want to do all the prep work myself, thus minimising his labour. As you can...
