hi

im currently in the middle of a full bathroom renovation.
i want to run a new 16mm 2 core and earth cable from consumer unit to new shower position.
i`ll get a sparky to actually install the shower and cable into consumer unit/rcd etc...
but that wont be for a while and i need the cable to go in now before i put floor etc down..
question is, does anyone know where i can get about 12 metres of 16mm 2c+e (pay by the metre)?
i've had a search and can only find 50m or 100m rolls, bit of a waste as i only need 10-12 metres.

thanks all

most electrical wholesalers will sell you a cut length mate.it is pretty standard practice.

yeah, thanks mate.
only problem is i live fairly rural (60 miles to nearest city/wholesale shops)
:D

Are you sure you need 16mm² , might make termination difficult... it would be preferable if possible to re-consider the route and installation method and hopefully you'll be able to get the design down to 10mm²

well i was planning on a 10.5kw shower,
the minimun lengh of cable i could get away with is say 4.5m to 5m to the isolating wall switch then another 1.5m to 2m to shower.
can that be done on 10mm. would it require a 45a or 50a rcd?

cable would not be covered in insulation.

the reason i wanted 16mm is basicly for future proof and the reason i wanted about 10-12m was to take it to the cieling for a 50a pull cord isolator.

10mm² can take 64A clipped direct..

10.5KW is 43-46A ( depending on if it's rated at 230V or 240V.. )
10mm SHOULD be fine..

I say SHOULD because without being there to see the exact run, it's impossible to be certain..

12m, not covered with insulation (wall and ceiling) would be fine with 10mm.

You would require a 50amp MCB, but should also RCD protect the circuit.

Use a 50amp pull cord - The Crabtree ones are best (also rebadged as Marbo).

yeah i had my eye on a nice chrome crabtree one :)

Try ringing a couple and see if they take phone/visa orders, if they are delivering in your area most will be happy to drop off, i live in a ruralish area and they have runs to different areas on different days.

I find Edmundsons most obliging but will vary branch to branch

TLC-Direct sell 16mm T&E by the metre and they'll deliver.

Again, you'll have fun terminating it in a pullswitch. Make sure the one you buy will accomodate 16mm.

thanks mate :)

yeah i was thinking 16mm maybe a squeeze...
was looking at this pull cord.. http://www.screwfix.com/prods/86784...e-Low-Profile/Crabtree-Pull-Switch-Chrome-50A
doesnt say what cable it accepts upto.
this other crabtree one only accept up to 10mm http://www.screwfix.com/prods/90597.../Crabtree-Range/Crabtree-50A-Pullcord-Sw-Neon

EDIT: just checked crabtree brochure.. it will only accept 10mm, so it say s :(
anyone know of an alternative?
what isolators do people use with 16mm cable or do they just squeeze it in somehow?

If the OP wants a belt and braces install, I dont see the harm in using 16mm² cable, and terminating it locally (say, in the loft) into a metal box or a mini CU, and then carrying on in 10mm² to the pullswitch.

what isolators do people use with 16mm cable?

MK 50A pullcord part no 3164 WHI from the technical specs says it accepts 16mm. I think they are available from TLC direct.
