I have just bought a new house and the heating is a back boiler system, i have had a mate round to look at it and he reckons that is all fairly new and in good condition. As i haven't got a few grand to replace it then it looks like its staying!

The only problem is that i have got a hideous gas fire called a Potterton House Warmer 2.

Does anyone know if these can replaced with a more modern version?

If not is it advisable to cover it with something like a radiator cover?

This sounds rather ancient. There are not any fire replacememnts that I know of.

I wouldn't recommend covering the fire with anything as this could obstruct the air flow to it needed for the gas to burn safely.
