blocked drain

when i moved into my home my drain was ok for the first few days but after a while the drain started to overflow and began to smell,i emptied the drain out and put my hand in the pipe and i pulled out alot of white stuff which my partner said looked like tile adhesive. for a while the water drained but now its gone bk to being blocked.. any advice would be great

the white stuff is probably stuff the bulk washing powder up with, made worse with low temp washes.Clean out thourghly with hot water etc then get the mrs to use liquid stuff
 
Is this a gulley, taking waste from a kitchen drain? (You said you could get your hand in the pipe.)

It sounds like a typical emulsion of grease, detergent and other crud. You need to dig out as much as possible, poke a way through the rest of it with a drain snake, and only when the drain begins to flow properly, use caustic soda to clean the drain.

In my opinion, it's a waste of time putting chemicals in a drain while it is blocked, because you're likely to end up with a drain full of nasty chemicals which is still blocked.
