My son has Chaffoteux Celtic combi boiler. The boiler is fine whilst just on hot water, but when switched to central heating, the temperature keeps going up, pressure needle goes mad and the temperature keeps going up untill we think the safety shut off kicks in, cutting the gas off completely. You then have to leave for 10-15 minutes again before you can light it again, but then the same happens again.

Any ideas what or where the fault could be?

cheers

Lack of water in system? Failing pump? blockage on CH circuit?

hi thanx for tips, when the plumber came he said the water pressure was to high, he drained out to set guage at 1bar, rads all get hot, pump works plumber says its kettling(boiling) but doesnot know why as soon as it reaches 90c it cuts gas off

You should get a proper heating engineer who will know why the boiler cuts out at 90C - it's the overheat stat. Plumbers who don't understand that shouldn't be messing with boilers.

He is a Corgi registered heating engineer.

So its the overheat stat

Cheers

He is a Corgi registered heating engineer.
He's not a heating engineer if he doesn't understand overheat stats. Best get someone competent.

LOL

he maybe CORGI but he dont know what the hell is he is talking about

hi boiler saga continues having fitted a new o/h stat& thermocouple the boiler remains the same still boiling it has has a new expansion tank fitted as that was leaking now having spent over 100 quid on parts nothing has changed any help would be great or is the boiler just knackered?

Check the flible hose coming off the pump for blockages and also clean out the filter. 99% of the time on celtics they just need unblockng.

That's what happens when you use incompetent people to fix your boiler.

thanks for tips but no blockages found temp still rising when c/heating switched on and water pressure guage still goes beserk changed o/h stat not cured problem the boiler has to be turned off due to the noise from pressure guage, as for quote about thats what you get using incompetent people the o/h stat was put on due to advice off this site thanks again i would welcome constructive help

You were not advised to change the o/h stat. Read what the post actually says .... and get in someone competent.

The pipe to expansion vessel sounds definatly block f the pressure is still goin berserk despite a new exp vessel fitted.

The pipe to the expansion vessell WILL be blocked..always is. but the will not cure the rising temp problem. If the pressure needle judders this means the temp. is too high. Things to cause this are pump problems or system blockage. The fact is that its a celtic. In the top 3 worst boilers of all time. Just behind the myson midas, or ideal isar. R.I.P it out!!! NOT YOU PERSONALLY!

Behind the isar?, I would replace the isar in that list with a lynx....or a leblanc, or anything else french really.
