Planning to dig a circle out of my lawn and lay a patio with reclaimed common clay bricks (flat all round).
Will be filling with leveled compacted hardcore. I'm wondering if sand is ok as a bed or should I use mortar? I'd like to mortar between the bricks when done either way as I plan on having a table and chairs on the patio and the mortar will hopefully make the surface slightly flatter and avoid chair legs catching in the gaps as badly.
Will sand do the job as a bed (on top of hardcore)? If mortar is better, dry mix or wet?

A sand/gravel mix would be a way to go - what pattern are you thinking to use in laying the bricks, and how far above the lawn surface do you plan to build?

Dry mix better; it'll cure from the moisture it wicks up from the ground. Wet mix would likely need more clean up after
