Bricking up a doorway...

Hi,

I would like to brick up a doorway. Now I have a few question around this.

1) Weve knocked down a small non-supporting wall and found that the actual wall was built on top of a thick piece of wood rather than the floorboards. Is this normal?

2) Should we place a similar strip of wood across the opening of the doorway we are now going to brickup?

Im just a little confused as to how to go about it. Which way is best etc.

Hi, Just a thought, but could you fill in the doorway with a stud wall i.e. timber framework 100mm x 50mm with plasterboard fitted to both sides and then skimmed with plaster finish giving very little extra weight onto the existing structure. If plaster skimming is a problem for you try using Easifill which is used on dry lining to fill the joints and screw holes in plasterboard - easy to use just like it says on the tin.
