What's the name of the thing to pull a cable under a road - mole or something?

a ditch witch.. that's what I've heard the machine called..
pushes a rod with a steerable tip.. then you hook a cable onto it and pull it through..

holmslaw is right - a ditch witch cuts a channel!

Can't find a cobra nor information on a mole - ie can one hire one etc!

I have a garage on the other side of a narrow lane, could probably cut a trench without anyone noticing but have been thinking of running the electricity under the road. Currently goes over the road using the electricity companies pole (fair exchange - it is on my land without their asking)

intresting, so does this thing dig a trench or dig long holes?

If it drills long holes how would you direct it?

The tunneling thing is called a Mole Plow (Plough?)

Specialist bit of kit, we sometimes use them at BT when we arn't allowed to dig up a road due to new tarmac etc. When I say we use them, we have to get in contractors so its unlikely you'd be able to get hold of one.

Cobra is a flexible fibreglass rod on a reel a few hundred metres long, for roping through existing duct.

Mole Ploughs need a fair sized hole to begin with, and can get nocked off course fairly eaisily if there is a large stone etc in the way.

You obviously need to be aware of underground services already in situ......and obviously *shouldn't* be tunneling under a public road.

My FinL has got a mole plough, he uses it with a tractor. It cuts a deep, narrow trench in which a pipe or cable gets laid. He uses it to lay water pipe on his farm. The bit of kit for pulling cables etc. underground, I've always known just as a mole.

the tip is steerable, just like an oil drill..

I don't know the exact technology on how they do it..
