Can anyone help with car emissions?

Can anyone help with car emissions? My car failed the MOT on the emissions test and the garage wants £160 for it and they don’t even know what’s wrong. If anything as I did not get a emissions readout from them. What are the main things I can do? So far all I have done is put some redex through it as my wife ran out of petrol last month and its been cutting out since. So far it has been running better but what can I do to reduce the emissions? Air filter seems to be ok
The car is a Mitsubishi elegance 1.8 v reg if this helps.

Try taking out the air filter for the test and put it back in afterwards.

An MOT tester I used to know did this all the time to get his customers cars through the test!
