I am considering adding a hot water circulation pump to our domestic hot water system because of the long draw offs. Could someone please explain what additional pipe work is required for this and where the circulated water is returned too in a vented system.

Well, you would probably want to insert a bronze pump into a convenient point off your existing DHW drawoff and install the return into the HWC secondary return tapping that you probably don't have.
Oh, and you would also have to install the secondary return pipe work as well.
