Corgi gas regs and legality

Just a thought: it is well known that working on your mains gas supply is illegal (and for good reason), but I was wondering to what extent? I mean, back at Uni I got to work with gases that are not as explosive as mains pressure methane but certainly more dangerous in other respects (if you have a liquified gas spill it is possible that one will be asphyxiated and there is no warning smell). I am not CORGI registered and as far as I know no-one in the lab was CORGI.

Does one have to be CORGI to turn off the supply at the meter? What about to turn it back on again?

And one more thing, if someone DID install a gas hob illegally but to all intents and purposes correctly (i.e. with metal pipework, checked for leaks), would this make the house unsellable? Is there a certificate you get to say "I got my hob installed professionally"?

You can turn your own meter off and on as you want, its charging someone to do it when not qualified thats illegal, if ever you put a token or a credit card in a meter you are in practice turning it on or off. You don't need any paper work to prove a gas appliance has been fitted properly to sell a property just to rent it.

The problem would come about if the illegal installation ever caused a problem that the hse became involved with....they would leave no stone unturned in finding someone to crucify. You may have installed and tightness tested it but did you check ventilation requirements, positioning, working pressure etc, etc?
