There was only ever 1 version of C50 breakers I recall.
If as you say the current ones are type "C", as these were around well before Type "C" what rating the were the early ones.
BS3871 type 2. And I suspect that the replacement ones in reality still are (as in the design probably hasn't changed) just they are classified on the newer standard now
Type 2 was magnetic trip operating between 4 and 7 times the rated current. I'd imagine its probably in the 6/7 end of that range, and when classified to 60898, that then falls in the 5-10 range for a type C.
The colouring of the numbering on the handle only denoted breaking capacity. White = 3ka, Yellow = 4.5kA.
@ OP - I'd just get hold of a 30/40/50A crabtree breaker. Come off that in 6/10mm single to a din rail enclosure bushed to the side of the DB and fit a schneider D16 breaker for the compressor. Simples. The materials wouldn't be much and it would be pretty quick to do
