Never seen one with that much overhang before; maybe the bricks are tied back in some way, or are they perhaps pre-fabricated brick panels?
However it's arranged, ideally you still need to devise some way of fixing the top of the pier(s) to the underside of the lintel/exposed brickwork. Packing the joint with mortar won't suffice.
Assuming 2/3 of the bricks are exposed, then presumably they are solid bricks (ie no holes through them). Can you drill and plug a metal bracket to the underside, projecting down into your new outer skin, and build the bricks around it?
