Do you have to be CORGI to change a pump?

As far as I am aware, anyone working on any gas appliance must ensure that the appliance is working correctly and safely after repairing it.

If he is not an RGI how can he do this :confused:

He is not working on the gas side. Anyone can switch on an appliance and see if it working. In the case of a boiler, if heat is going to the rads it is OK. If he sees that the flames are odd or whatever, then he turns off and recommends a CORGI.

Its a pump FFS whether its in the case or in the airing cupboard what difference does it make. Perfectly ok for non corgi to change.
Stop trying to talk the job up.
A pump is no way classed as being a gas fitting much the same as a blow off valve on a boiler is covered by water regs and not gas regs no matter what BG are now implementing

well said.
why do some people let the word corgi, heating engineer,gas go to their head i don't know.
they must drive the old women crazy

The same as you BB, never worked on gas have you Dr Drivel. Just trolling the internet for answers as usual.

Anything goes tits up then it will be a case of last man to work on boiler, no back up from the dogs or anyone.

Any plumber should check his insurance covers him before working on a gas appliance.

interesting debate.

but in the end it must come down to...........

unfortunately, no mater how unlikely, if the worse were to happen there would be no distinction between gas & water side when the HSE had to investigate.

have to agree with that.

BTW, BG are only putting AR's on certain PRV terminations cos they want to cover their arse from potentially dangerous terminations. they haven't said its part of the gas regs and as they dont write them they cant anyway. we dont have to note anything thats in the water or leccy regs as long as it doesnt pose a danger to the customer.

They'd have to choose beween gas regs, water regs and HASAWA

COrgi themselves say you CAN change a pump in a boiler without being Corgi regd.
NOT a pcb say, though, because it interacts with gas controls which would have to be tested afterwards.

your right as usual.

work is defined as...

"work" in relation to a gas fitting includes any of the following activities carried out by any person, whether an employee or not, that is to say -

(a) installing or re-connecting the fitting;

(b) maintaining, servicing, permanently adjusting, disconnecting, repairing, altering or renewing the fitting or purging it of air or gas;

(c) where the fitting is not readily movable, changing its position; and

(d) removing the fitting;

=> this would be irrelevant in these circumstances.

(9) Where a person performs work on a gas appliance he shall immediately thereafter examine -

(a) the effectiveness of any flue;

(b) the supply of combustion air;

(c) its operating pressure or heat input or, where necessary, both;

(d) its operation so as to ensure its safe functioning,

so you cant remove a radiator for decorating then as its as relivant to the boiler as the pump!!!!

ok over simplificaton

but the pump is as connected to the boiler as the room stat or the timer

surely there replacement would be treated the same way as the pilot going out and reegnited by the button [magnitron]
you would not expect a gas system check that was unrealted to the work you have carried out to be unessisery as you are only expecting to reinstate the functions of the defective or removed components !!!!

but heywhat do i know i am only a chippy :rolleyes: :D

Is he telling me the truth?
yes
That all depends on how you interpret the regulations. ;)

3. - (1) No person shall carry out any work in relation to a gas fitting or gas storage vessel unless he is competent to do so.

"gas fittings" means gas pipework, valves (other than emergency controls), regulators and meters, and fittings, apparatus and appliances designed for use by consumers of gas for heating, lighting, cooking or other purposes for which gas can be used.

"gas appliance" means an appliance designed for use by a consumer of gas for heating, lighting, cooking or other purposes for which gas can be used ...
Where is the link from?
I was quoting straight from The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998

They don't matter as they are just a registration authority. They keep a list of professional gas installers. What matters is the building regs (which is law), what documents they refer to, and HSE.
