Why is it that the washing machine has taken to filling itself up with water and proceeding to leak out of the door or when it gets high enough the powder/conditioner tray? There is no leaking during any cycles.

Do you mean when the washing machine is switched off? If it is filling during the course of the day it means that the valve(s) that admits water is/are not seating/sealing correctly. Likely to be mains valve though some machines only have one valve anyway.This needs replaced or at least cleaned I would replace. What make is it?
