Emergency light in a meter cuboard

the emergency lamps are fairly expensive (though I have a couple)

unless the power goes off at a convenient time, the batts may run flat before you go to it. So have a torch in there as well. there are some with a flashing LED which lasts a very long time and helps you find them in the dark.

Don't forget a set of runway lights leading up to the cupboard where the torch is kept...

;)

Maplins sell wall mountable circular lamp units powered by a C size battery. Fit it on the wall above the board. Push the lamp cover and it lights up. I have one in my cupboard. Simple.

But when the power goes off you cant see it to turn it on! ;)

My personal favourite idea is to use a computer UPS pack connected to the lighting circuits via IEC leads from FCUs. :) If the tiny battery in a EM light can power an 8 watt light for 4 hours, then a UPS will power an 11 watt light for several days! (Though the power used by the UPS converting the voltage will most likely drain the UPS within a day)

Actually its much less than that,

A UPS for a personal computer might have a 12v, 6Ah battery, giving 12x6 = 72 watt hours of energy, enough to power your 200w computer for 72/200 = 0.36hours or roughly 20minutes (which is enough time for it to give a brief window to allow the distrubution companies auto-reclosers to work, or for you to get up off your arse and reset an RCD and if it still hasn't come back after a few mins, to start a shutdown sequence on the PC)

for your CFL....72/11 gives about six and a half hours, somewhat less than you were expecting!

The basis is that I put the lamp above the board and everyone in the family knows its there. I don't feel the need to cater for an unescorted visitor or a burgler...

Are you particularly worried about a burgler who dosent own a torch breaking in and stealing your electricities during a power cut?

I have a lamp with an 8 inch tube, battery and invertor. It connects to the mains via a lead to a 13 amp plug with 2 amp fuse fitted.

As long as it is plugged in and there is power a red LED glows.

If the power fails, the plug is pulled out or the socket is switched off then the LED goes out and the 8 inch tube lights up.
