I know what you mean, just thinking in the old days of 3 layer of roofing felt with bitumen is approximately over 10mm, getting thinner now but as you say it should do the job like an umbrella!, is it just one layer? Only 1mm thick but if it can keep 100's litres of water in a pond, then surely it'll keep the rain out. Plus it'll be uv/rot/wildlife resistant.
