I purchased a new bath ceiling fan...basic model, nothing fancy. When it came to the wiring, it stated to connect the black w/black and white w/white. Simple, although I am a do-it-yourselfer, I'm not an idiot. (I did our outside lighting with no problem.) But it also said to connect the green wire w/ green or bare wire. Now what if there is no green or bare wire for me to connect the fixture to? Do you just cap it and leave it be or does it need to be connected somehow?

Thanks in advance for any help.

if the fan has a green wire then it should be connected to earth

while it would work without earth it would not be safe

you need to replace all non earthed cable in the route feeding the fan with earthed stuff (right back to the main board if needed)

What plugwash meant to say was

if the fan has a green wire then it should be connected to ground

while it would work without ground it would not be safe

you need to replace all non grounded cable in the route feeding the fan with grounded stuff (right back to the main board if needed)

The first two are generically true in any part of the world - I imagine the third point depends on local codes...

I'll ask the moderators to move this to Outside UK.
