Hi,

We are currently decorating a room in our 1930's house. We have removed an old fire from the wall and have been left with the hole in the picture below. Whats the best procedure to go about bricking it up as of course this goes into the chimney breast. We no longer require a fire in this room.

In the same room we have removed an old electric air vent unit. We have again been left with a hole, this one going all the way out through both layers of brick. Again whats the best procedure for having this bricked up.

Both photos are below. Thank you.

Mike

the old fireplace openin is soot coated an needs wire brushin.
the flue will needs sweepin - get all your flues swept at the same time.
afterwards simply use bricks or blocks to fill the hole, plaster over an then insert a hit an miss vent - all unused flues need through ventilation from bottom to top.

the air vent unit: carefuly nock it out from theoutside, it might be screwed in.
remove any bits of brickwork to allow use of full bricks if possible to make good the hole, keep the bond an bed depth ( 10mm).

the cavity seems to be blocked up - or is that cavity insulation.
if the cavity is blocked with rubble the debris could be bridgin your DPC an lead to damp.

Once the fireplace has been plastered its worth putting a cover on the chimney pot, the type that will allow air to circulate in the flue but will stop rain entering the old fire place, the cover would also stop birds nesting in the redundant chimney pot
