Have taken an exisiting socket out of a wall and had wall re-plastered. Now i've put new box back it sits too deep into wall. Whats the best way to bring this box forward? It is currently in breeze block.

Even a 47mm box would be shy of surface, the wall behind came out too loose when old box was removed.

Mix up some quick set cement and put a dab at the back of the box, then push the box into the cut-out until it is just back a tad from the wall.

Thx m8, was what i was planning but wasnt sure of the best way forward.

fix it in with sand and cement mortar. this gives a good firm fixing (brush out dust from the cavity first, and moisten it with water to prevent it drying out before it hardens).

Because mortar goes stiff much slower than plaster or filler, you have plenty of time to poke it in well round the sides and bottom, and push it over the top to fill the back. Keepchecking for straight and level as the mortar will hold it in place once packed tight. Smoothe the edges with your thumb when finished and allow space for a little plaster or filler to give your decorating finish.

You will need at least one screw through the back to stop it pullling out, you can drill and plug and put the screw in loosely before mortaring in,and tighten it after the mortar has set (allow a few days). This is just to prevent the faceplate screws levering it out of the wall.

This needs more time and effort than smudging plaster over the top, which is why professionals generally don't do it, but it gives a very good and firm fix which is resistant to cracking or falling out.

edited,bah, far too slow
