yeah it is a problem!, flush the system (hot water and any tank fed cold taps, WC's).

may have to disinfect, but dont know.

maybe worth checking with the makers of the inhibitor on what to do.

1) Find the stop-cock that turns of the water supply to the tank (it may turn off all the water to your home, that's OK)

2) Turn off the boiler so it does not try to heat .

3) Turn off the stop-cock

4) Turn on your cold bath tap. It is probably connected to the cold tank, so will drain out all the contaminated water (if so, don't turn on any of the hot taps yet)

5) Have a look in the cold tank and see if it is empty. If so, turn off the bath tap, and turn on the stop-cock to refill it.

Then repeat steps 3/4/5.

You may find that the inhibitor puts "foam" in the water from the taps - in which case, continue the flush and fill until it stop, then once more.

When you are sure that the tank is clean, run the hot bath tap until it has drained the tank.

Then turn on the stop co

(the reason for not flushing the hot cylinder until you are sure the cold tank is clean, is to avoid pulling any contaminated water into it).

For the next day or two, make sure you drink and brush your teeth only in water from the kitchen tap (which will not be supplied from the tank).

Thanks!

Just turned the water off and running taps but still a bit concerned!!!

Any more advice?!

ARGH!!!

That's OK, it sounds as if your cold bath tap is not supplied from the tank, but direct from the mains. In that case, just run until the tank is drained, then fill, turn off, repeat, a couple of times.

If that's how it works (some houses are done like that, especially outside London) then your cold taps are unpolluted, so safe to drink.

Is the water coming out at all foamy?

Have a look on the label of the inhibitor, see if theer is a Customer Help phone no; if you ring that they will tell you if there is anything extra you need to do.

Water isnt foamy at all. Just clear.

After a few refills and drains will it be ok to shower etc?

I should think so. The smell is quite noticeable, especially in HW, so I think you'd notice any remnants.
(You certainly won't go rusty, though you might froth a bit. ;) )
Remember to flush all the taps which are connected to the tank.

Should be safe.

The advantage of draining out the cold tank, then refilling it, then draining again, is that after two drains only slight traces will be left.

Personally I would give it another drain and refill in the morning as well.

If you leave the boiler on to heat up the cylinder, then run the hot taps slowly in the moringing until cold, it will have pushed out all the water that has been standing overnight (because it is hot, it comes out forst and does not mix with the fresh cold water entering at the bottom.

As your drinking water is not contaminated the flushing should make it safe. Lots of people get a bit of inhibitor-water on their hands when plumbing and it is not generally considered dangerous like descaler could be. Just don't drink it!

Rang the 24 hour helpline and no one answered!!!

Taps are now empty so filling again but it didnt completely empty the tank!

Keep calm ;)

If you have the opportunity to bale out the last few inches from the tank (a plastic dustpan is handy for that) into a bucket, it will make the flushing more efficient.

Just refilling again.

Thanks a lot for your help!!!

Successfully changed the radiator but fell at the last hurdle!!!

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I do like that !!!

Dont get very worried as inhibitor is pretty harmless if you dont drink it neat.

I would only do a couple of tank changes before going back to normal. But just remind your family not to drink the bath water or make coffee with the hot water!
