Help - non standard tap!

Hiya,

We just tried to change the washer on a dripping bathroom tap, but when we removed the cap, we just found a solid thread (see pic on link below) in a shallow star-shaped hole. No screw in sight.

We can't really get to it from underneath / behind either because of the design of the bathroom, and we're hoping there's just a really simple explanation...

Any ideas / advice gratefully received!

Tap the chrome head upwards to release it from the splined shaft!
