This is interesting. I was told to double over if one conductor entered the terminal, but not if two (i.e. a socket on a ring).

It's dependant on the type and size of terminal. A large terminal with a screw would need filling as much as possible so you may need to double the end over if a single cable is entering. If the terminal is clamping (like an MCB) then you wouldn't need to double the end for a single cable.
