Hi all - First time poster, so please be gentle!

I'm in my 30's and I'm looking for a career change / way into plumbing. I was talked out of it as a 16 year old lad but its always been there, nagging away in the back of my mind.

I have plenty of practical experience and understand about things like bonding, can work with and solder copper pipe, fit cabinets to walls, build stud walls etc. I also have basic tiling and plastering skills. However, I have no formal plumbing qualifications. I do hold a CSCS card though.

What i'm looking for is some advice/recommendations on the qualifications to take and ways to gain experience around my current job.

I'm guessing that theres no better way of getting experience than actually doing the work and with that i'd like to speak to any current plumbers in the West Yorkshire area who might be looking for a second pair of hands.

Hopefully I'm in the right place for answers.

cheers
Andy

If your arms are up for it then do plastering instead...less tools, less agro, no rules, and earn a whole lot more.

Usefulbloke,is there a need for an additional plumber in your local area.

Other trades are available but consider working away from home during the week, your existing skills say you are a competent handyman.maybe the handyman route would be a better outlook.

Thanks, I can do it, albeit im no professional but I'm not sure id get the same fulfilment out of plastering.

Ive done a little research.
so then you will know anyone can call themselves a plumber :sneaky:

being a specialist in any trade has its advantages, although its a non glam boring job there are often vacancys for gas/elec smart meter installers.training will be available. ok its work but while getting experience there is also possibility of progression (for suitable people) to management.
when the smart meter programme is complete, there will always be a need for smart meter breakdown technicians and training of others.

try to specialise (y) or join the queue of wannabe plumbers.
