IMMERSION HEATER PROBLEM

Sounds like the element itself has gone.
For the hassle it will cause it is cheaper to get a new one they range from £7.49 - £10.99 (they do at screwfix)
you will also need a immersion heater spanner to undo it, but try and undo it by hand when you get it as the copper cylinder is easy to ruin.
Switch off the mains FIRST and drain the tank
as i said screwfix have them and you can see for your self at
