Is it the rad stat or TRV that's causing this problem?

Hi All,

My son's radiator is either on full pelt or off. If he turns the rad stat off the rad cools down but even if he clicks the stat up to 1 or 2 the rad is burning hot. Anything I should look at first?

Cheers

Thermostatic radiator valves sense the air temperature in the room, not the water temperature in the radiator. As the room temperature rises towards the set temperature the TRV gradually closes, but still lets some hot water pass through the radiator.

if you can post photos of the two valves (one at each end of the radiator) we can explain more easily.

When you (slowly) turn the TRV from the Hot to the Cold setting, do you hear it shut with a bit of a thud?

What number are you setting it to? You should not need to tinker with it, just set it to "3" or whatever and leave it.

The radiator is either on or off, a TRV cant heat upor cool down the water entering the rad, once the room gets to whatever the valve is set at it will close down, the valve senses the temp of the air in the room
