Hi all.

I woke up this morning to a puddle on the floor in front of my Stanley range.

Managed to take some covers off and saw a drip right at the back. Oh bugger!

Managed to get an oil and gas engineer in this afternoon and he tells me the heat exchange unit is leaking and it needs replacing. Otherwise it could just suddenly fail and cause a real flood.

However he said it’s a specialist job and I need to get an Aga Rayburn guy in as he would be out his depth.

Long story short I’ve rang 10s of numbers off google and got through to most to be told it’s a massive waiting time to be seen due to recent weather. And upon asking for a rough quote for the job I’m told it is the price has varied from £1500 to £3000. And also numerous times been told that it’s probably not worth repairing. Oh and most specialists don’t touch Stanley - Only Aga Rayburn.

I don’t really want the range set up for heating and cooking going forward but also did not want to replace the systems any time soon due to £££.

Has anyone had experience in having a similar problem???

Thanks in advance.

Dominic

I must confirm as title is a bit misleading, the range is oil fired but is leaking water.

Thanks.

A lot of engineers don't touch range cookers as they are a bit special and a bit heavy to work on.Bob

Repair consists of total disassembly of the cooker and then rebuilding. £3000 is not that much for parts and all that work, plus you'd lose your kitchen for 2-3 days.

I can understand. We have a Stanley and had difficulty finding an engineer to do a service when the previous one stopped due to ill health. Current engineer is very good though. Bit of a long shot but what part of the UK are you in, he might travel within reason ? We are in Somerset
Might be worth ringing Stanley and asking if they have a book of contacts. Might be a struggle though.
I have wondered what we would do if the heat exchanger failed, our Stanley is part of the kitchen and we do like it. I keep the system well dosed with inhibitor and now have a Magnaclean.

Found a previous post of yours, looking for bricks, appears you are in E. Yorkshire.

SO AFter more and more phone calls and quotes and googling we have come to the conclusion that the Stanley is for the scrap heap (eBay for spares/repairs)

We are having LPG fitted next week and a combi boiler installed. Along with a fan dangle Smeg range in baby blue (it looks pretty said the wife).

5k lighter we have a future proof system. The combi has a 10 year free servicing and warranty and the Smeg has 3 years warranty.

Quite happy to be honest. Hopefully all will go well on the install next week.

Off topic slightly. Have had LPG for heating our annex for many years and were 'locked in' to companies with tank swaps required to change companies. You no doubt have a good 2 year contract, but if you do nothing prices will creep up, bit like insurance.
Whilst not available on the 'Go Compare' type sites there are web companies who will get you a best deal, after 2 years. Just remember they are there and use them to negotiate on your behalf. Tanks swaps no longer required.

THAnks for the advice. Running a 2 bottle system for now and seeing how long it takes to run out. If it’s steady we’ll keep the bottles. But if it’s always running out we’ll get a tank.
