Loft floor

yeah your right,i will be able to at least support two joist on them ,but my thinking was that because the large supporting wall has no wall underneath it on the ground floor because of a through lounge i thought i might as well leave the joist self supporting ,its only £32 per joist and all i need is 8 of them so might as well let them take the load, going to put up shelves on the party wall to take the heavy tools etc..........but what do you think about the heavy duty splice plate idea? got a quote of £8 exc vat per plate

I bet the supporting wall has an RSJ under it at the through lounge.

oh yes it does but thought best to leave it alone as i dont really want my cowboy diy being connected to the rest of the house :)

update.........i decided to fix two timber wall plates to each gable end (220mm x 75mm c24) with 190mm 12mm diameter steel bolts which were fixed into the wall using chemical resins and then fixed timbers in 1 piece (5m x 220mm x 75mm c24)to span the full length, I got the timbers into the loft by cutting a slot near the loft hatch to get them in, to lift the timbers up from ground level to loft I used a winch that i bought for £70.......best money I have ever spent.......i have included some pics
