thanks johnd much appreciated i did think this but just needed to run it by someone who knew there stuff to be sure i hadnt missed anything i just cant understand a new cooker going like that after such a short while

i have just seen another reply saying i may have shorted the neutral how would i have done this? please explain,
When you have been working in the switch area it is possible the insulation has chaffed on the neutral cable or the wire has been nipped when you have put it back together & shorted to earth, in which case it would not cause the mcb to trip until the cooker was switched on & completed the circuit.
