Hi Tom! The pipe was not threaded. Approx a metre of pipe of yellow plastic pipe was attached using some form of compression joint.
Your query also reminded me of the wheel type pipe cutters. I recall seeing these. They were suitable for pipes up to about 4 in. but I don't recall anyone actually using them. I remember the installing of a Manchester power saw and from that day on all pipes were sawn to length before threading.
