Could someone please explain what a normal 3 bed house should have in terms of earthing.
Not including the Ring Mains, Lighting Circuits.
Would very much appreciate a drawing if possible.
Many Thanks :D

You should have a 16mm Single Copper cable for the main earth from supply cable to a Earthing block, more 16mm from there to your board.

10mm Single Copper cable from your earth block to your incoming gas pipe, connection made withing 600mm of the isolating valve, then another 10mm Single Copper cable from your earth block to your main water intake, again within 600mm of any stopcock/isolating valve or insert etc.

supplementary bonding, which is addition bonding, should be done in the bathroom linking all the pipes together and then to the Earth connection in each electrical item, e.g. in the light, at any electric shower, and connection for a shaver outlet (on the mains side)

hopefully havent missed anything :D

Would that be the same for the kitchen sink and pipework in the kitchen, and would that bonding be 4mm. Thanks again.

supplementry bonding in the kitchen is not required by regs

its probablly a good idea though

Yep 4mm Single Copper Earth for the supplementary, no need to bond in the kitchen, Cross bond all the pipes with 4mm at the bolier (this doesnt go back to main earthing terminal)

Whoops, one more thing, you mention cross bond, would that mean the same as supplementary bonding.

Yes, Supplementary bonding on the bolier, which is cross bonding between all the pipes, this must be unbroken, best way is to remove a section of PVC, say 1 inch or so, then hook this around behind the washer on the earth clamps.

hope this helps, seems like you have it well figured out tho ;)

You'll find nice drawings in the On-Site Guide - go and buy a copy.

Although not required by the Regs, it it wise to run a min. 4.0.sq.mm. bonding cable from all the metalwork in your immersion heater cylinder cupboard, down to your main fusebox.

If you read some of the other postings, Immersions can "be reasonably expected to" give high earth leakage currents or "protective conductor currents" in use in certain circumstances.

If I get time I'll have a look, but I'm pretty sure the only posts I've read that say that are yours...

NIC book

snags and solutions - earthing & bonding

is a good investment for 15 quid.
