To cut a long story short we recently moved house and had some work done on our central heating system having to drain system to add a couple of new rads when the system was being drained the water was very very black the plumber commented on how he hasnt seen much worse when the system was refilled after work being completed there is a banging noise from the boiler when the pilot light cust in and you can hear it for a few seconds when the light goes out what do you think this could be we have put some de-sludger in the system and drained it we have put in some Tower xxx Descaler in last night and it doesnt seem to have made any difference this morning how long does it take for the de-scaler to start working? is it also worth putting some fermox noise reducer in or is de-scaler the same thing

You may have a blockage,

Using your garden hose to blow water thru might force more black sludge out clearing your blockage.

Is it a Combi sealed system or open vented ?.

Sounds like a blockage to me too. The water cannot circulate so it is boiling in the boiler and making nasty noises.

Sounds like a job for a Powerflush.

It really needs a professional to assess and treat a seriously sludged system if you want it done quickle and efficiently.

Just tipping an assortment of chemicals is rather pot luck and in any case there may not be enough flow to get them to where they are needed.

As Joe suggests, a power flush may be the best solution.
