Im not Dan, we call them Honeywell red and white button gas valves, just a thing from 30 years ago for obvious reasons, it might be your gas valve, as said your engineer has seen it I havent, make sure that the injectors are totally clear, the LPG gas has a very very small orifice and blocks very easily, I think that is what yor problem is if you havent had a new gas valve fitted

Wow £490.00. Thanks for showing it to me though Ian. At that price, not knowing whether or not it might be the valve, it would have been too much of a gamble so I would have probably gone for the new boiler option. Before spending that much I did, however, enquire about replacement solenoids as a possible fix. Then I was advised by the seller to try an alternative first.
Fortunately it wasn't the valve but something much more simple. In fact it didn't cost a penny thanks to Malcolm, a wise old gas fitter, who gave me a tip about 'extinction pop' problems which he had experienced with elderly Concords. Job jobbed now, and the boiler has been running without problems for over a week, extinguishing with a gentle bubbling noise as in days of yore.
'Can't possibly reveal the solution on a pubic forum though ~ much too dangerous ~ eh Grumpy!

Hindsight being a great thing.
If only you had spoken to ‘Malcolm the wise old gas fitter who knows what he’s doing’ sooner, it would of saved you time (and possibly money) on the first “qualified engineer” who incorrectly diagnosed that the gas valve was at fault.

Please tell me though... how does the average "unqualified" person like me distinguish the "qualified engineers" who know what they're doing from the "qualified engineers" who don't know what they're doing? Perhaps I'm too simplistic but my route was to go online, find someone near me who advertises himself as a commercial LPG specialist (as I say there aren't many in my area) and give him a call. I did that. He's now been coming for about 4 years to give my LPG stuff (3 boilers, a cooker and a grill) the annual check/service (in a B&B it legally has to be done annually by a qualified engineer as you know) and, contrary to what you obviously think, I wouldn't be stupid enough to try and write myself a certificate. There's never been a problem until now and at least he admitted that his diagnosis might be wrong, rather than adopt the 'holier than thou' attitude which is what some of your profession appear to thrive on. He doesn't even come across as being grumpy either, which appears to be an added bonus!
I wonder if you would have given the correct diagnosis first time? How I would have been certain that you, another "qualified engineer", knew what you were talking about. I suppose I could have checked the gas register to check your/his qualifications, but hadn't found that necessary or even thought of it until now.
However, since you obviously still think that brucek is his own "qualified engineer" I've done just that and I'll even pm you his name & details if you like so you can check for yourself that I'm not lying.
Here's what came up (all ticks for both Natural gas & LPG.) and yes, there's a six digit Gas Safe number in bold type.
