Hi,
We're having a small extension built and obviously the wiring will be modern colours. Is it OK to have the original part of the house on red/black wiring and the new part modern colours (brown/blue)?.

In Scotland, if it makes any difference.

Hello,

A combination of different coloured conductors is fine, so long as you put a warning notice on the consumer unit saying so.

It makes no difference at all, though your electrician should put a sticker on the box stating that the installation uses both old and new colours

Should be OK, providing the existing wiring isn't already past it's 'sell by date', and in need of replacement / upgrading.

The CU should be marked up with a label "CAUTION - This installation uses colour codes to two versions of BS7671" so nobody gets caught out.
