l,m going to paints breeze blocks that have never been painted before.Whats the best method of going about this, using emulsion paint.Do l seal them first, if so what with. What would be the best roller to use and length of roller.l,m also going to paint alot of skirting boards and door frames around the house, so instead of putting my brushes into terps l,ve heard you can put them in water and use them this way, is this right.

Depends on the finish of the blocks..and how the joints in the mortar have been finished, if they are flush then a long pile woven pile 'lifetimer' sleeve will probably do it..

If they are recessed then you may as well buy a decent four inch brush and brush them

You dont say whether they are in or out...but either way thin the first coat by 25% ish..

What do you mean 'put the brushes in water'....are you talking about leaving them in water in between paint jobs..if so ..yes just give em a shame out before you use them.

Thanks for the reply zampa. The breeze blocks mortar joints are recessed, so you recommend using a brush for this. Also , yes that's correct l want to use the paint brushes between jobs and wanted to know if putting them into water was ok, what do you mean by give them a shame out when using them again from water.

Shake...sorry..eyes aint what they used to be!..or wrap em in a plastic bag or cling film and keep em somewhere cold.

zampa these breeze blocks are taking ages to paint with a brush, l don't seem to be getting anywhere.lt just soaks the paint up on one brush stroke, and the paints been diluted.Any other suggestions on covering them quicker.

You could try a roller but the problem is you roll the flat bits then have to brush the joints..or vice versa..and if you leave them to long youl end up with edges because the paint had dried to soon....give it a go though..it might suit you better..or try it on the second coat maybe..

l've got a long wall to paint, would there be any method to spray paint them.Could l hire something which will do this with emulsion paint. If there is,any ideas.

Buy this "12 inch Double Arm Roller Refills Long Pile and cage". Then when applying emulsion with roller have someopne ready to go behind you with a brush IF the roller cant get into certain bits.

The best way to paint breeze blocks, assuming that they have never been painted before, it to spray and back roll them first with blockfiller. This is a generic product widely available in the USA but in the UK probably only from Dulux through their Decorator Centres under the Glidden brand.

It is a bit like thin plaster, but it blocks up and seals the holes so that you can finish the job with one or two coats of paint rather than have the blocks drink gallons of paint like blotting paper.

To spray blockfiller you need an airless sprayer, then you just work it in with a classic roller, probably on a pole. You may be able to apply it with just a roller, but I have never tried this.
