deep sea trawlermen, commercial divers, window-cleaners and coal-miners risk their lives every day, and contribute to the quality of life of the rest of us. Lifeboatmen risk their lives to save others. So do firemen.

JohnD c'mon perlease... you talk about high risk jobs...but they're high risk for many different reasons... e.g. trawlermen.... they are profit driven, and it's a non essential product..... window cleaners? their only danger is their ladder... nothing violent about that... commercial divers? what about commercial drivers.... many more of them and they face a lot of risk on our motorways !!!
The other suggestions are valid, but what if the firemen have bother? who do they call? the buck stops with the copper !!!!
