Pre-Diabetes

I've started having jumbo oats in the week with youghurt, banana, seeds and honey. Mrs Mottie says that’s good but I have a portion for three people so I’ll have to cut down on that. Weekends I¡lol either have fish - either poached smoked haddock with poached eggs, scrambled eggs on toast, kippers or smoked mackerel And I’ve been told to stop finishing off what she leaves on her plate! I don’t have her will power - she literally stops eating when she is full even if it means leaving a forkful of mash or 5 peas on her plate! "Finish that off" I tell her. "No, I'm full" she says.
Honey is liquid sugar, bananas while a slow release carb are still full of natural sugar

It just sounds like you’re a greedy bastard lol

Is diabetes a genetic thing (inherited) or is it simply a lifestyle thing?
Type 1 is mainly genetic. Neighbour is late 80s and been type 1 since a child. Teresa May is type 1, and looks very healthy. Like a lot of things, it's down to the individual to manage it and look after themselves.

2 is more lifestyle. My Mum is 2, with insulin and 88 next month - although she doesn't take it too seriously, her diet is terrible and zero exercise. Just got indestructable genes. Old Man is 91 and been pre 2 for years - only on Metformin. Recently his health took a real dive, his prostate cancer worsened and ended up in hospital with brain haemorrage. Some reason this sent his sugars way up and now on insulin too. Both are healthy weight.

When I saw the quack recently I asked about the chances of me getting diabetes as both parents have it. She looked at me and said as I have no excess weight around middle not very likely. It's excess fat around the midriff that seems to be a big factor, because this means excess fat around organs which affects the pancreas' ability to produce it's own insulin which naturally controls blood sugar. There are no easy answers to this, but to Mottie I would say a drastic lifestyle change may be needed to view food differently and control/reduce weight, especially if it's around middle. Your body is giving advance warning of potential problems ahead. Sad fact is we could all eat and drink what we wanted once, but from 50s onwards, the body is less able to bounce back - it needs more help. Not easy, but it's proven when people go on strict diets they either reverse type 2 or avoid going from pre to insulin dependent. Too many hazardous conditions associated with diabetes not to take it seriously.

I was diagnosed Pre diabetes a week before moving to Australia.

I met a doctor whilst there. (Still friends) she and my local doctor confirmed. Treatment and advice was so good that when I come back to England I was no longer Pre diabetic.

However last year after my illnesses I was diagnosed type 2 over the phone. He prescribed me drugs.
I had had enough of drugs so I just maintain and bettered my diet.
When I eventually met with my diabetes specialist, (Romanian) she said I was well under. She was so pleased with me, and she was brilliant at her job.

However I may be on the wonk at the moment.

My diet remains to be good (in the main)
but like Mottie I may eat to much Greek yogurt, Kefir, seeds, frozen berries & Manuka Honey.
Also too much sourdough.

I do drink to much and McDonald's have reintroduced the breakfast wrap.

I started the yoga up again, but that's gone on hold again.

So I need to get back on soon.

My best advice to everyone with borderline, Type 2 or Type 1 is: Look at Australian websites, they really are on top of this. Australia is behind America with obesity and diabetes so they really know how to deal with it.

It’s crept up on me since I stopped smoking nearly 20 years ago. It’s easier to give up smoking than it is to cut down on food but I’m going to give it a bloody good try this time. (y) I managed to go from 17st to 15st in about 3 months when all the wives decided to go on a diet one Christmas and challenged me to join them. We all had to get weighed once a week at Boots and post copies of the weight machine ticket of our weekly weights up on a WhatsApp chat called 'fat bastards'. Six of us had a £20 bet, winner takes all. I won but I also paid up and got them all to donate to a Foodbank. That was 6 years ago though. Oh to be that size again!

That reminded me of something from years ago. When I had a lady working for me in the office, she was friends with the lady in charge of students that they sent to us from the local authority. The lady from the LA was a bit on the large size. One day I overheard them discussing diets and she said she was going to have to go on a diet. Trying to console her, my lady said "Oh, you’re just big boned Shar". "No", she said, "I'm a greedy fat bastard!"

I did dry January “almost” and dropped a stone. People noticed and I felt a lot better. But then I made up for it in February

Red wine is like liquid cake and I like liquid cake.
 
Personally I gave up long ago on listening to all the latest health fads...

Eat well, but in moderation - and avoid alcohol at breakfast...

It ruins your day apparently ;)

And not indulging in worrying about the latest 'health scare' also helps...

That's how men achiever cold resistance. Internal fat. I used to be pretty cold resistant compared with many then my wife joined weight watchers. We discussed meal sizes and I chose to match hers rather than recalculating for a male.Net effect with no real apparent external size changes I went from near 16stone to 15 and suddenly found the need to wrap up more in conditions where previously I had no need to. This must have been 15 years ago. I held the 15 for a long time without any problems. Now older, some slight tampering it's 14 stone and a lower metabolic rate and cold resistance is something of a problem.

I too put on weight after I gave up smoking.

I've put more weight on after becoming less mobile. It is so so easy to carry on eating the same amount that you used to eat when you were more active and not realise what you're doing.

Last year, I resolved to finally do something about this situation. If I don't, I will be dead soon.

Since Christmas, I have worked on improving my diet by eating foods that are better for me.

I weighed myself just now and I am 159kg.

Now I need to work on quantities. I have started putting a recommended portion size of food (eg muesli yogurt etc) in a bowl then putting It next to the bowl of muesli that I usually have. Or the same with a portion of curry, etc...

It is actually shocking to compare and see the difference.

So, I have a long way to go and I'm sure there will be issues along the way, but I don't mind documenting my story here.

I will stop short of posting pictures of me in my undercrackers because (as Mrs S says) noone wants to see that....

That's true. When I was a lot bigger 30 years ago I was always hot. Never had radiator on in bedroom in winter and always opening windows. Now I'm a lot more wirey (skinny) I need to be a lot warmer.
