Hi, it seems quite a few of these Protherm boilers have a similar fault to mine so I hope someone can help me.

Boiler will run DHW and for no apparent reason cut out, particularly annoying half way through a shower. Also sometimes I'll turn it on and it just doesn't fire up at all.

Will show F1 error code but not always.

Have to turn it on and off again at the mains switch to get it to work, leaving it anywhere between 10 seconds and 10 mins or so.

Similar with the CH although this seems to give more F1 fault codes
than DHW.
Had it serviced regularly and spent a few quid trying to narrow down this problem so far with no joy. Had overheat thermistor replaced but still the same - I didn't want to rush straight in to a new PCB as I'd imagine these are expensive.

would be grateful of some advice
many thanks in advance
Simon
P.S. Boiler is 6 yrs old

Is it a Protherm 80E ??
Or
Is it a Protherm 80e ??

Bet it's an "e"
Would you believe they're different!?

WHat's been tried so far?

F1 is an ignition failure and can be caused by several different problems. However, as they are all combustion related then you need a competent CORGI boiler engineer to diagnose the exact problem.

While you say that you have spent "a few quid" presumably you have not yet employed anyone to diagnose the fault?

I dont think that you should pay unless the fault is correctly diagnosed. Expect a no-fix no-fee arrangement.

...........Unless it's overheating or the pcb's dud. ;)

Is the pump running after it dies?
Have you been pressing overheat reset button?

Hi Chaps, many thanks for your replies.

according to the manual its an 'E'.
Had a corgi reg firm look at it, they then contacted heatcall who assured the engineer it was the overheat stat, replaced that and worked fine while the engineer was there then a day later back to its usual tricks.
Called out the firm again and boiler behaved perfectly until after engineer had left !

Pump does run after it dies for a little while.

Very rarely comes back on after hitting reset button, have to turn the thing off and on again !! (although hitting reset does remove the F1 fault code on the display)

Help !!!
Hi
just wondered before I called the corgi engineers yet again if any of you could throw some more light on my problem.
Great one this morning, half way through shower and tripped to F1 again.
Had to turn off mains power for 10 mins till it would come back on (triem first for a minute, then 5 mins)
A few people I've spoken too have told me its probably the pcb but if there are any Protherm specialist out there I'd love to hear your views.
many thanks in advance.

Did you resolve this? I have one doing the same

Hi Chris
still not there yet, we're having to reset it once or twice a day so having had the overheat stat changed I can only assume its not that (or the new stat was faulty)
I thought I'd run it once a day while looking at the readout and keeping a note of how long it would take to cut out and what temperature it cut out at to give the engineer a clue. Yup, you guessed it, runs perfectly when I watch it. I'm getting them in again next week (just waiting for a call back for when they can come) so I'll update if they find the reason its doing it.
Let me know how it goes with yours if you find the answer sooner.
cheers
Simon

Hi, I know its been a few years since the last post, but what was the outcome? My protherm 80e is going to F1 several times a day, on DHW & Heating.
Many thanks

hi merv3031 having same problem but only on central heating stops and starts when it wants, no code comes up on the screen it still shows temp , if you get any clues on the cure give us a call if you will thanks eric

Hi Eric,

If you are not getting any boiler faults coming up, I would look at changing the diaphram. thats the cheapest option and the most likely cause.. only cost around £7 for the part and doesnt take long to change. hope this helps.. Merv

hi merv, thanks i will try that, i can get the part from preston, near to me i need to know where the diaphram membrain is situated in the boiler, if you can help, it does not show it in the manual, thanks ERIC :?:

After nearly every item being changed on this boiler it turned out to be the display board. As an engineer I can see why most gas engineers would miss this as it seems ridiculous that the display board should have any control over the temperature (it should do nothing but digitally display the temperature), but it does apparently.

What happens is that the display board displays fairly random temperatures. When it reads more than 90 degrees C it causes an F1 fault due to the over temperature reading (even though the boiler may have been switched off overnight). If your boiler is not reading steady temperature readings, appears to jump around all over the place, gives very high readings and regular F1 trip outs the problem could well be this.

We nearly resigned ourselves to a new boiler, so it was a close shave.
