Hello.
I was wondering if anyone could help me with any thoughts on dampproofing contractors please.

I'm looking at having some work done, and have had three companies all recommend the same course of action.

Two of the companies are larger companies, registered with professional bodies, offer guarantees of the work, etc. They're not cheap, no surprises there.

The third is a local builders who have quoted a very good price. They are well reviewed on Which?Local and offer a guarantee on the dampproofing product itself.

I'm a dampproofing novice, so wondering if there's any reason I shouldn't consider using the local builders for this work?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

You need to use a proper specialist company who offer an insurance backed guarantee for the whole job - 10 to 12 years nowadays. Not a builder who just hires the kit for the day

An insurance backed guarantee is nothing more than an insurance policy against failure. Nothing to do with a guarantee.

Tell us more about your problem and the suggested remedy.

What else could it possibly be?

Insurance backed means that it will be honoured over its term and subject to an ombudsman route for complaints, unlike a company backed guarantee which can cease if the company goes bust, and has no other recourse for complaints

Yes it's an insurance policy. Forget the guarantee bit.

I still don't understand what you are getting at.

What else is an insurance policy/guarantee/warranty or whatever supposed to be?

What other provision do you expect a company to make, or a customer to have, to deal with a possible defect claim at some future time?

Just call it what it is - an insurance policy.

think what he is getting at is,
that company's used to give 25 year guarantees, but the chances that the so company will still be in business is lets say 'slim'
so they get the customer to pay for an extra insurance, trouble is will the insurance company pay out if the treatment has not been installed the correct way.??

Of course the product is guaranteed - the manufactureres do that ;) Damp proofing , despite what people think is NOT rocket science . A family member spent a few years working on a company doing that , including tanking basements - ended up a pretty good plasterer. I don`t know what your Which starred ** builders are like . I know that it`s probably quoted at ££££££ being London . Let us know and I can then compare - price per sq, meter ( if you like ) to us Sussex boys

GET REAL .
Most guarantees are provided by the suppliers of the chemicals they sell to the 'here today-gone tommorrow ' installers.

PROVIDING OF COURSE-- the installers have done the job according to the book.
Terms & Conditions' ALWAYS apply..
Be aware of that..
SIZE of the company means nothing at all.
How Long they have been trading (UNDER THE SAME NAME -OF COURSE)--Means much more..
Beware-- this is a certain field that chancers, blaggers and bumholes specialise in--especially Down South.

Why anyone would want to live near London amazes me .
Yes-- big bucks are paid there-- but EVERYONE THERE NEEDS BIG BUCKS'-- to pay for any work that needs doing .

Better life 'UP NORF' :) :)

That is true. However many things such as cars, consumer goods, holidays, fuel, etc cost the same whether you're oop north or daaan south. So in the end you could argue that those daan saarf would accumulate more wealth over the longer term that those oop norf!
