Radiator bleeding woes

I've just replaced one of my radiators, after refurbishing a guest room. I've replaced like for like, didn't drain down, just cut and capped the pipes live.
The new rad was very slow to fill, and in fact I'm pretty certain that air is being sucked in, rather than blown out. It has got warm, but not fully.....in fact there's another two rads suffering now.
My system.....vented, old as the hills, F/E tank in the loft, 3m head. No motorised valves, the thermostat controls the C/H pump, hot water thermosyphonic. Having said that, all has been fine to date, plenty of H/W and heating and very reasonable bills.
I confess to attempting to bleed with the pump off, and then with the pump on.
Does it sound like I have a blockage between the F/E tank and the system, do you think...assuming the F/E has water in it, of course?
Thanks for any points of view!
John :)
