Removal of metal rawl plug

Everyone on here generally does their best to help but there is always a right way to do most things & in this case I just happened to know it. Most regulars have the grace to accept & build on another’s better advice; why take a sledge hammer (or drill in this case) to crack a nut!

Just tried the pushing it in method and found that didn't straighten the plug enough to come out without damaging the board, however fyi once I had pushed the thing in enough to loosen it I could get my pliers over the head, crush and twist and the head comes off. The rest can then be pushed back into the wall.
