Personally I think the old fella did rather well - I bet he was worn out just calling one heating engineer.....he'd never cope with getting a number of quotes - old people's comprehension and memory just cant cope with that.
Next time there's a crisis - he'll call you which could indicate that he got it wrong this time!
Water under the bridge now, anyway. I hope his boiler behaves itself!
John :)

Going back to the OP , I dunno wether he was ripped off or not ? & unless u know the full circumstances neither does any one else ??

We ounce charged £200 odd squid to change a 1/2 " ball valve , on the face of it some would say we ripped them off ????

ripped off go talk to the legal profession bunch of scheisters charge by the minute.

Most if not all of the rgi's on here , in many cases never get paid for all there time on any job, all do & have worked for nothing or done alot for free , but no ones interested in that after all it does not readily fit the image !

Rouge traders , dear me a programme that takes a serious subject ( maybe ) & turns it into some type of comedy show to entertain the masses employing so called experts most of whom would'nt know there backside from a pine apple & are probably encapable of practiseing what they preach!

Awful to think that one day we will be old and stubborn too :(

Sue

He is fortunate that you take an interest, anyway.
John :)
awful  au contraire - when I get to 87 ( 30 years) There won`t be one door knocking , scamming , Chugging( charity mugging) that won`t be afraid to call here - I`ve already told 2 lots where to go  - We are the baby boomers and we take no prisoners - Probably start getting active in local politics when I`ve finished sorting the house

You clearly haven't met my ex's dad.
In his nineties and sharp as a tack until the day he kicked the bucket.

A few years ago I came across this fellow in his 80s living in sheltered accommodation who still went out to do plumbing repairs in launderettes.

So, Tony, did HE insist on his elderly over '70's clients having a chaperone?

It was meant to be a lighthearted comment......but yes I agree on solicitors charges.... 2 minutes to witness a signature this week £250.
Maybe we are all in the wrong job.

Sue

yes price was high
but don`t see any recourse for you as the boiler worked all
i can suggest is possibly get maintance contract set up so this might not happen again

When I have needed to have an affidavit countersigned by a solicitor, I have been surprised to find there was a fixed price agreed by the law society and it only cost me about £5 plus £2 per additional page/document. Its an additional £5 if there are two signatories.

Unfortunately the Malaysian solicitor and his lovely Malaysian assistant have moved or retired so I dont know how many other solicitors follow that low price or if they are meant to or can choose to or not.

Nor do I know if your signing was within the gambit of whats covered in the £5 fee. But its certainly worth checking with the Law Society!

Tony

I am sorry to p..s you off.

I am not moaning, i am just trying to find out if th price can be justified. What a miserable lot some of you are here on this forum I would think about a change of job if I were you. Surely at £69 an hour you can afford to do the odd good turn for someone.

Keep smiling :) Sue

I called the Vaillent Company for an engineer for my first boiler (15+ years ago) their charges THEN were £35 per 15 mins which started when they actually started work on the boiler the chat before hand to try to work out the problem did not count, he had a stop watch and as soon as he finished he put it off I was lucky 1 hour did it so it was £140 + callout fee of £25.
That was 15 years ago!!!
I have had a maintainence contract ever since not only do they come if it breaks down but it is serviced each year & definately worth it for peace of mind. Some companies will also cover plumbing emergercies.
Yes it sounds a lot but if he called the Worcester folk these companies consider their repair peeps "specialists" (note the quotes)
Unless you think they are rogues in which case they wont listen anyway,
I think the most you can say to them is that when the cost was mounting they should have told him how much it was going to be and given him the choice of whether to continue or not.
Can I also say that not EVERYONE over the age of 60 is mentally senile
I hope to get another 2 weeks at least before that happens.

But the bottom line is, he was ripped off, right?
