We are renovating our new home, its a big job so making any cash we can is crucial! Just wondering if anyone has an idea of the scrap value of an iron staircase which is outside and reaches the first floor balcony. We are taking the balcony down and just wondering if there is any value to be had versus the cost of the builder taking it down! It is a fairly simple staircase, bit of decoration but not that special.

It is a 3.5m wide balcony made from decking boards inside a metal frame - its not beautiful!

many thanks!

Depends on the type of iron. Could be mild steel, cast iron, aluminium etc.

Best thing would be to ask a local scrap merchant for a price. Is there a small piece you could take to them for a definitive answer as to type of 'iron'?

on the telly property programs they put these on ebay etc and sell them, buyer removes/collects

Take photos to show it was there, in case you ever want to have a balcony & external stair again.

Aluminium is a different metal to iron. Steel is made from iron with added carbon, but the scrap prices are similar. Stainless is worth a bit more.

Put a picture up, scrap is done on weight as someone said but I make gates rails balconys etc for Living so if it's chunky material it'll be worth something.

Maybe even advertise the whole lot on gumtree?

I'd say cut it up and use the metal in something else! Or scrap although its like 8p a kg
